Nitroglycerin Anal Ointment Information

If you are dealing with pain caused by an anal fissure (a tear in the lining of the anus), your healthcare provider may recommend nitroglycerin anal ointment (RectivTM). This medication has been shown to decrease the sometimes overwhelming pain associated with chronic anal fissures. It is currently the only nitroglycerin medication approved to treat this condition in the United States.

The ointment is usually applied twice daily, for up to three weeks. Make sure to wait 12 hours between applications.

Although this product is generally effective and well tolerated, not everyone can use nitroglycerin anal ointment. The drug's safety information should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to minimize risks and to help ensure a safe treatment. For example, this product is not recommended for people taking certain medications, such as Viagra® or Cialis®.
