Leuprolide Acetate Drug Information

Leuprolide acetate (Eligard®, Lupron®, Lupron Depot®) is a hormone medication used to treat several medical conditions, including:

  • Advanced prostate cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Central precocious puberty (a condition in which puberty occurs too soon in children).
  •
It is available in the form of injections. For example, depending on the condition being treated, your healthcare provider may recommend a daily subcutaneous injection (an injection given just under the skin), a long-acting subcutaneous injection, or an intramuscular injection (an injection given into a muscle).

This prescription product is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what drugs you are taking before prescribing leuprolide. Although many people do not have any problems while using it, side effects are possible, such as hot flashes, fatigue, and general body weakness. Fortunately, in many cases, these reactions are minor and easy to treat.
