Etoposide Drug Information
Healthcare providers prescribe etoposide to treat certain types of cancer in adults. Etoposide comes in the form of a capsule that is taken by mouth and as an injection (Toposar®) that is given slowly into a vein. Etoposide is also available as etoposide phosphate (Etopophos®), which is the salt form of the medication that is given by IV.
Etoposide capsules and etoposide injection are approved to treat small cell lung cancer. The IV forms are also approved to treat testicular tumors (cancer of the testicles) that have not adequately responded to previous treatment.
Although this can be an effective medicine for many people, not everyone can use this chemotherapy drug. Information on etoposide should be carefully reviewed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to help minimize complications. People who have bone marrow problems, infections, or certain allergies may not be able to safely use this medicine.
