Dronedarone Drug Information

Dronedarone (
Multaq®) is a drug approved for the treatment of certain irregular heart rhythms known as atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. It is available by prescription only and comes in the form of tablets that are typically taken twice a day. Compared to other arrhythmia medications, dronedarone is much easier to dose and is less likely to cause dangerous side effects.

It is not yet clear exactly how dronedarone works to treat arrhythmias. Most arrhythmia medicines are divided into four classes depending on how they work. At this point, it seems that dronedarone has activity that belongs to all four of the classes. Clinical studies have shown this particular drug to be useful for preventing heart-related hospitalizations; it can also help delay the time until the first recurrence of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
