Dinoprostone Drug Information

A woman may receive dinoprostone (Cervidil®, Prepidil®, Prostin E2®) for several reasons, such as:
 
  • Preparing the cervix for labor and delivery
  • Terminating a pregnancy
  • Removing the contents of pregnancy after a missed abortion or intrauterine fetal death
  • Treating nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease.

Dinoprostone comes as a vaginal insert, vaginal gel, or vaginal suppository. The product used will depend on the reason this drug is being given and how the woman responds to it.
 
While this product can be effective for many women, not all women should receive this drug. Information on the possible risks of using dinoprostone should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before receiving it. For example, women who have had vaginal bleeding during their pregnancy or who have had a previous cesarean section (C-section) should not receive dinoprostone.
