Dexamethasone Eye Drop Information

Dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension (Maxidex®) is available only by prescription and is approved for treating swelling of the eye and eyelid caused by certain eye conditions, infections, or injuries. As a type of corticosteroid, this medicine works by reducing inflammation and interfering with the body's normal immune response.

This medication comes in the form of an eye drop. It is typically used many times a day. Your dosage will depend on the type and severity of your eye problem.

This eye drop is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what medications you are taking before prescribing dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension.

Although many people do not have any problems while using this eye drop, side effects can occur and may include temporary eye symptoms, such as burning, redness, and stinging. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.
