Certolizumab Pegol Information

If you are an adult with Crohn's disease or rheumatoid arthritis, you may benefit from certolizumab pegol (Cimzia®). When used for Crohn's disease, this medication is meant to be used in people who have not responded well to other treatments.

This prescription drug comes in the form of an injection that is given by your healthcare provider every two to four weeks, depending on how far into the treatment process you are. Most people are able to use it without any problems. However, side effects are possible and may include joint pain and urinary tract infections.

This medication is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what drugs you are taking before prescribing certolizumab pegol. In particular, let your healthcare provider know if you have congestive heart failure (CHF), any type of infection, or a disease that affects the immune system (such as cancer, diabetes, or HIV).
