C1 Esterase Inhibitor Information

C1 esterase inhibitor (Berinert®, Cinryze®) is a drug prescribed to help relieve pain and swelling caused by a rare genetic condition called hereditary angioedema (HAE). Specifically, Cinryze is used to prevent HAE attacks, while Berinert is used to treat an HAE attack that has already started.

Before prescribing C1 esterase inhibitor, your healthcare provider will need information on your medical history. For example, let him or her know if you are pregnant, have any allergies, or are taking any other medications.

Although most people tolerate C1 esterase inhibitor well, side effects are possible and may include nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Fortunately, most reactions to this drug tend to be minor and easy to treat.
