Bortezomib Drug Information
A healthcare provider may recommend bortezomib (Velcade®) to adults who have certain types of cancer. This drug is specifically approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) in people who have not previously received chemotherapy treatment or in those who have not responded adequately to other treatment. It is also used to treat mantle cell lymphoma (a type of cancer of the white blood cells) in people who have already received at least one other treatment.
This prescription chemotherapy drug is given as an injection either slowly into a vein (intravenously) or just beneath the skin (subcutaneously).
Although this can be an effective treatment for many people, not everyone can take this drug. Information on bortezomib should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before taking it to help ensure a safe treatment process. For instance, women may not be able to use this medication while pregnant, as it may cause harm to the unborn child.
