Cholinesterase Inhibitors
The use of
donepezil with other cholinesterase inhibitors should generally be avoided. These medications work the same way and can have addictive effects in the body. This increases your chance of experiencing a side effect from donepezil.
Bethanechol (Urecholine)
The use of donepezil with bethanechol can produce addictive effects in the body. This combination should generally be avoided due to the increased risk for a
donepezil side effect.
Succinylcholine (Quelicin)
Taking donepezil with succinylcholine can produce addictive effects in the body. This combination should generally be avoided due to the increased risk of experiencing prolonged muscle relaxation caused by succinylcholine.
General Anesthetics
If you are taking donepezil and are going to have surgery or a procedure that requires general anesthetics, your healthcare provider may choose to adjust your donepezil dose. Donepezil can increase muscle relaxation caused by general anesthetics.
Anticholinergics
Donepezil and anticholinergics have opposite effects in the body. This can decrease the effectiveness of either medication. If you are taking both donepezil and an anticholinergic medicine, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your condition more closely and make any necessary dosing adjustments.
Other medicines can have anticholinergic actions in the body that can also interfere with donepezil. Some examples include:
- Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®)
- Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton®)
- Brompheniramine (Lodrane®)
