What Is Dinoprostone Used For?

Women may receive dinoprostone for various reasons, depending on the particular product prescribed. This medicine comes in the form of a vaginal insert and a vaginal gel, which are used to help soften the cervix for labor and delivery. There is also a vaginal suppository form of dinoprostone that is used for causing an abortion, emptying the uterus, and treating a certain cancer-like disease of the uterus.

An Overview of Uses for Dinoprostone

Dinoprostone (Cervidil®, Prepidil®, Prostin E2®) is a manufactured (synthetic) form of a prostaglandin, a hormone-type substance found naturally in the body. It is available by prescription only and comes in the form of a suppository, a gel, and a removable insert. All forms are inserted intravaginally by a healthcare provider.

Dinoprostone vaginal gel (Prepidil) and dinoprostone vaginal insert (Cervidil) are approved for ripening the cervix in pregnant women who are at or near term and have a medical reason to induce labor. Cervical ripening is when the cervix thins and softens in preparation for labor and delivery. This allows the cervix to dilate and the fetus to pass through during delivery.

Dinoprostone vaginal suppository (Prostin E2) contains a slightly higher dose of dinoprostone. It is approved for the following uses:

  • Terminating a pregnancy
  • Removing the contents of pregnancy after a missed abortion (missed miscarriage) or intrauterine fetal death
  • Treating a condition of the uterus known as nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease (also called benign hydatidiform mole).

A missed abortion is the term used to describe a miscarriage in which the contents of the womb (the uterus) do not exit the body. When a pregnancy spontaneously ends after the 20th week, it may be referred to as an intrauterine fetal death. A spontaneous abortion is not the same as a medical or surgical abortion, which is the elective termination of a pregnancy.

Dinoprostone is used to induce a medical abortion in weeks 12 through 20 of pregnancy, and to remove any remaining material from the uterus after a miscarriage up to 28 weeks of pregnancy. It is important to remove all the material from conception, as any remaining tissue could cause infection or other problems.

Dinoprostone is also used to treat women with a condition known as nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease, a cancer-like disease of the uterus. In nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease, cancer cells grow in the tissue that formed as a result of conception.
