Precautions and Warnings With Dinoprostone Vaginal Suppository

Specific Dinoprostone Vaginal Suppository Precautions and Warnings

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this medication include the following:
  • Dinoprostone vaginal suppositories should only be given by a trained healthcare provider in a hospital setting that can provide intensive care and emergency surgery if needed.
  • This medication should not be used if the fetus is able to live outside of the womb.
  • If dinoprostone vaginal suppositories do not cause a complete abortion, other treatment may be needed to ensure all the products of conception leave the body. Otherwise, serious problems may occur, such as infection or bleeding.
  • This medication should not be used to ripen the cervix or for any other use in pregnant women who are near term. Other medications that contain lower dosages of dinoprostone (the active ingredient in dinoprostone vaginal suppositories) are used for cervical ripening: Cervidil® (dinoprostone vaginal insert) and Prepidil® (dinoprostone vaginal gel).
  • Certain women may need to be monitored more closely when using this medicine, including those who have any of the following conditions:
  • You may experience a temporary fever while receiving this medication, usually 15 to 45 minutes after the suppository is inserted. Drinking fluids may help reduce the fever. Your temperature should return to normal within two to six hours after treatment ends. Contact your healthcare provider if your fever persists, however, as it could be a sign of a more serious problem.
  • It is unknown whether this drug passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to receiving dinoprostone vaginal suppositories (see Prostin E2 and Breastfeeding).
