Dinoprostone Vaginal Suppository Side Effects

Some women who receive dinoprostone vaginal suppositories may experience side effects, such as vomiting, fever, or diarrhea. Most reactions to this medication tend to be minor and treated easily. However, it is important to let your healthcare provider know right away if you develop severe uterine pain, chest pain, or other potentially dangerous problems.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Dinoprostone Vaginal Suppositories

Just like any medicine, the dinoprostone vaginal suppository (Prostin E2®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most women tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Dinoprostone Vaginal Suppository Side Effects

Some side effects of dinoprostone vaginal suppositories are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Abnormally strong or frequent uterine contractions
  • A persistent or high fever
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Severe uterine pain (lower abdominal pain or pelvic pain)
  • Persistent fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal (stomach) pain, or diarrhea
  • An abnormally beating heart or a feeling of fluttering in your chest.
