Dinoprostone Vaginal Insert Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Dinoprostone vaginal inserts have been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of women who received the insert were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in a similar group of women who received a placebo (a vaginal insert that did not contain any active ingredients).

In these studies, the most common dinoprostone vaginal insert side effects included:

  • Very strong or frequent uterine contractions -- in up to 4.7 percent of women
  • Signs that the fetus is not well or is fatigued (fetal distress) -- up to 3.8 percent
  • Both very strong or frequent uterine contractions and fetal distress -- up to 2.9 percent.

Rare side effects, occurring in less than 1 percent of women, included:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the dinoprostone vaginal insert side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while receiving a dinoprostone vaginal insert or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
