Drug Interactions With Dextromethorphan and Quinidine

More Detail on Drug Interactions With Dextromethorphan and Quinidine

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when dextromethorphan and quinidine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol while taking dextromethorphan and quinidine. Alcohol may increase the effects of this medication on the brain, potentially increasing the risk for dangerous problems, such as a coma or slow or irregular breathing.

Alfuzosin
Combining dextromethorphan and quinidine with alfuzosin can increase alfuzosin blood levels, increasing your risk for potentially serious side effects. In most cases, these medications should not be taken together.

Alosetron
Dextromethorphan and quinidine may increase levels of alosetron in your blood, increasing your risk for alosetron side effects. Your healthcare provider may want to monitor you more closely if you take these medications together.

Amphetamines
Taking dextromethorphan and quinidine with an amphetamine or an amphetamine-like medication can increase your risk for a serious reaction known as serotonin syndrome (see Precautions and Warnings With Dextromethorphan and Quinidine for more information, including symptoms of serotonin syndrome). Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of serotonin syndrome.

Antacids
Taking antacids with dextromethorphan and quinidine may decrease the amount of dextromethorphan and quinidine absorbed into your body, potentially decreasing its effectiveness. Not all antacids will react with dextromethorphan and quinidine. Therefore, if you need to use an antacid while taking this medication, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist about which antacids are safe to take.
