Dexamethasone Intravitreal Implant Side Effects

Common reactions to the dexamethasone intravitreal implant include eye pain, increased pressure in the eye, and bleeding of the eye. Some people also experience temporary blurred vision. If you experience any potentially serious side effects during treatment with the dexamethasone intravitreal implant, such as vision changes or symptoms of a new infection, tell your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Dexamethasone Intravitreal Implant Side Effects

Just like any medicine, the dexamethasone intravitreal implant (Ozurdex®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects to Report

Some dexamethasone intravitreal implant side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider immediately. Potentially serious problems include:
 
  • Changes in vision, such as:
  •  
    • Loss of peripheral vision
    • Persistent blurred or clouded vision
    • Double vision
    • Problems with glare
 
  • Seeing floating spots or flecks in your field of vision ("floaters")
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye pain or redness
  • Slow healing of an eye wound
  • Symptoms of a new infection not related to the eye problem being treated, such as:
  •  
    • Itching
    • Discharge
    • Pain
    • Swelling
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
  •  
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
