What Is Desonide Lotion Used For?

If you have a skin condition that causes itching and inflammation, your healthcare provider may prescribe desonide lotion. This medicine is specifically designed to help relieve symptoms caused by eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, and various other skin problems. It works by reducing inflammation and suppressing an overactive immune system. At this time, there are no "off-label," or unapproved, uses for desonide lotion.

An Overview of Uses for Desonide Lotion

Desonide lotion (DesOwen®) is a prescription skin medication used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include but are not limited to:
Desonide is approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids. This medicine comes in three forms, including a cream, an ointment, and a lotion. The ointment is greasier, while the lotion and cream are easier and less messy to apply.

How Does It Work?

Desonide lotion is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids, which are a type of corticosteroid (or "steroid" for short). Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Desonide lotion works for most conditions by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.

Is It Safe for Children?

Desonide lotion is not approved for use in children. However, other forms of desonide (specifically, desonide gel or desonide foam) are approved for treating atopic dermatitis in children as young as three months old.
Children may be more likely to absorb more of the drug through the skin into the rest of the body, increasing the risk for side effects. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of desonide lotion.
In general, if desonide lotion or any other topical steroid is to be applied to the diaper area, diapers or "plastic pants" should not be used, as they may increase the absorption of the drug.
