What Is Desonide Gel Used For?

How Does It Work?

Desonide gel is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are a type of corticosteroid, or "steroid" for short. Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Desonide gel works for atopic dermatitis by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.
 

Can Children Use Desonide Gel?

Desonide gel is approved for use in children age three months and older. This medication should not be used to treat diaper rash. It should not be applied in the diaper area for any reason.
 

Is Desonide Gel Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend desonide gel for something other than atopic dermatitis. These uses (known as "off-label" uses) might include treating a variety of other conditions that are likely to respond to a topical steroid, such as:
