Dosing With Desloratadine

Dosing with desloratadine depends on your age, what you are being treated for, and any other medical conditions you may have. The daily starting dose for adults and children age 12 and over is 5 mg. Always take desloratadine as prescribed, never double up your dosage even if you miss a dose, and talk with your healthcare provider before you decide to change your dosing with desloratadine.

An Introduction to Dosing With Desloratadine

The dose of desloratadine (Clarinex®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • What you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
As with any medication, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Adults and Children 12 Years and Over
For adults and children ages 12 and over, the desloratadine dose for tablets or Reditabs® is 5 mg, once a day. For syrup, the recommended dose is two teaspoons (5 mg in two teaspoons), once a day.
If you have kidney or liver disease, your healthcare provider may recommend a starting dose of 5 mg, every other day.
Children 6 to 11 Years
The dose for children ages 6 to 11 years old is 2.5 mg once a day. This can be taken either as one RediTab or one teaspoon of syrup.
Children 12 Months to 5 Years
The starting desloratadine dose for children 12 months to 5 years of age is 1.25 mg of syrup a day (½ teaspoon).
Children 6 Months to 11 Months
The starting dose for children ages 6 months to 11 months of age is 1 mg of syrup (2 mL), once a day. For children 12 to 23 months of age, if symptoms continue, the dose can be increased to 5 mg per day. The 5-mg dose may be given as a syrup twice a day, 12 hours apart, and divided into two ½-teaspoon doses.
