Side Effects of Dalfampridine

Some of the most common side effects of dalfampridine include insomnia, dizziness, and headaches. In most cases, reactions to this drug are usually minor and do not require medical attention. However, there are some potentially serious problems that should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, such as difficulty breathing, seizures, and swelling of the mouth or throat.

An Introduction to Dalfampridine Side Effects

As with any medicine, dalfampridine (Ampyra™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Dalfampridine

Some side effects of this drug are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Seizures
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
 

Common Side Effects

Dalfampridine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials.
 In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication.
