Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion Dosage

If you have chronic dry eyes, a healthcare provider may prescribe cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion. The dosage of this medication is standard for everyone -- one drop in each eye twice daily, with 12 hours between doses. Because it can take three to six months for this medicine to work, you can also use artificial tears to help relieve your dry eyes while using Restasis.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion

There is only one standard dose of cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion (Restasis®). As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Emulsion Dosing for Dry Eyes

Cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion only comes in one strength -- cyclosporine 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion. The standard dosage of this medicine is one drop in each eye twice daily, with 12 hours between dosages.

This medication comes in a single-use vial, or dropper. Each dropper contains the correct amount of medicine needed for one dose (one drop in each eye). You should use one dropper for your morning dose and one for your evening dose.

Use the medicine immediately after opening the dropper, and then throw away any remaining product. Do not save an open dropper for later use, as this may increase your risk for an eye infection.

You might not notice a difference in how your eyes feel right away. However, your eyes should start producing more tears within one month of starting cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion. Sometimes, it can take three to six months to notice an increase in tear production.

You can use artificial tears in addition to cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion. Just remember to separate the two medications by at least 15 minutes. As cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion starts to work, you may notice that you need to use artificial tears less often.
