List of Controlled Substances

Controlled substances are highly regulated drugs, such as morphine, marijuana, and hydrocodone. When searching lists of controlled substances, it is best to search by the drug's "generic name," since not all brand names or street names are included. The "official" controlled substances list is the Code of Federal Regulations, which actually contains five different lists. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency also provides this information in a single list.

Controlled Substances List

In the United States, a controlled substance is a drug or other substance that is restricted and controlled completely. This means that the manufacturing of the drug or substance, as well as its ownership, delivery, use, and disposal, are restricted by the government. A few common examples of controlled substances include morphine, marijuana, and cocaine.

At times, it is useful to have a list of controlled substances. This article will discuss where to find this and how to use such a list.

Where Can I Find a List of Controlled Substances?

Although various resources and Web sites provide lists of controlled substances, the official source of this information is Section 1308 of the Code of Federal Regulations (the official list of federal rules and regulations). This information can be found at http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title21/21cfr1308_main_02.tpl. Section 1308 does not provide one list; instead, it provides five separate lists, one for each controlled substance schedule.

Although the five separate controlled substances lists that can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations are useful for many purposes, some people may find it easier or more useful to have just a single list. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) provides a single, alphabetized list at http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/schedules/orangebook/c_cs_alpha.pdf.
