Side Effects of Cetirizine and Pseudoephedrine

While most people have no problems with cetirizine and pseudoephedrine, side effects may occur. Commonly reported ones include dry mouth, insomnia, and dizziness. Serious side effects of cetirizine and pseudoephedrine include rapid heart rate, seizures, and hallucinations. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right."

 

An Introduction to Side Effects of Cetirizine and Pseudoephedrine

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with cetirizine and pseudoephedrine (Zyrtec-D®). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Cetirizine and Pseudoephedrine

Some side effects of this drug, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Wheezing or other breathing problems
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Feelings of a forcefully or rapidly beating heart (known as heart palpitations)
  • Chest pain
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Anxiety
  • Hallucinations
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the lips, mouth, or throat.
