What Is Certolizumab Pegol Used For?

Certolizumab pegol is a medication that is used for treating Crohn's disease in adults. It is not a cure for the condition but can be used to help decrease inflammation and relieve the signs and symptoms of Crohn's. Healthcare providers may also occasionally use the medication "off-label" for other conditions. Off-label uses of certolizumab pegol include the treatment of psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Behcet's disease.

What Is Certolizumab Pegol Used For?

Certolizumab pegol (Cimzia®) is a prescription medication approved to improve the signs and symptoms of moderately to severely active Crohn's disease in adults who have not responded adequately to other treatments.
 
Crohn's disease is a type of "inflammatory bowel disease," or "IBD." There are several different types of IBD, with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis being the most common. They all cause chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. Although much research is underway, Crohn's disease causes are not well understood.
