Certolizumab Pegol

Clinical Effects

Certolizumab pegol has been thoroughly evaluated in clinical studies. In these studies, people were given either certolizumab pegol or placebo injections (without any active ingredients). The response to the medication was assessed at 6 weeks and at 26 weeks. Crohn's disease symptoms were significantly improved in the group taking Certolizumab pegol at both 6 and 26 weeks, compared to the group taking the placebo.

Studies have shown that certolizumab pegol is more effective than a placebo for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, studies have shown that certolizumab pegol plus methotrexate (Rheumatrex®, Trexall®) is more effective than methotrexate alone.

Studies have also shown certolizumab pegol to be significantly more effective than placebo injections for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.

When and How to Take Certolizumab Pegol

Some general considerations include the following:

  • Certolizumab pegol comes in injectable form. Your healthcare provider will give you the injections. Each dose consists of one or two injections given just under the skin ("subcutaneously") in the abdomen or thigh. In some cases, you might be allowed to give yourself the injections at home.

  • The first three doses will be given two weeks apart (at zero, two, and four weeks). If certolizumab pegol seems to be working, it will be continued with one dose every four weeks (for Crohn's treatment) or every two to four weeks (for rheumatoid arthritis treatment).

  • For this medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It will not continue to work if you stop taking it.

Dosing Information

The dosage your healthcare recommends will depend on the condition being treated. As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
