Carmustine Implant Dosage

Your healthcare provider will determine your carmustine implant dosage based primarily on the size of the space that is left after he or she surgically removes a brain tumor. Up to eight wafers can be implanted during each surgery. The wafers can be broken in half, but should not be broken into more than two pieces.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of the Carmustine Implant

The dose of carmustine implants (Gliadel®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on the size of the space left in the brain after your tumor is removed.

Recommended Carmustine Implant Dosing Guidelines

The usual recommended dose of carmustine implants for the treatment of malignant glioma and glioblastoma multiforme is eight wafers implanted into the cavity that remains after a brain tumor is surgically removed. If the cavity is too small to hold eight wafers, as many wafers as possible should be used to cover as much of the cavity as possible. However, no more than eight wafers should be implanted during each surgery.

Each wafer contains 7.7 mg of carmustine (the active ingredient in the implants). This means the maximum recommended dose per surgery is 61.6 mg.

General Information on Receiving Carmustine Implants

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with carmustine implants include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of a small wafer that is placed in the brain during surgery to remove a tumor.

  • The wafers are placed along the floor and sides of the cavity created in the brain after a tumor is removed.

  • Up to eight wafers can be placed at a time to cover as much of the cavity as possible. The wafers can overlap slightly. They can also be broken in half, but should not be broken into more than two pieces.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage of the carmustine implant, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
