An Overview of Uses for Carbinoxamine Extended-Release Oral Suspension

Carbinoxamine extended-release oral suspension (Karbinal™ ER) is a prescription medication used to treat various allergic conditions. It belongs to a group of medicines known as antihistamines. Unlike some antihistamines, carbinoxamine extended-release oral suspension is not available over-the-counter (OTC) -- you can only get it with a prescription.

Carbinoxamine extended-release oral suspension is approved to treat the symptoms caused by the following allergic conditions:

  • Seasonal and perennial (year-round) allergic rhinitis, which is commonly called nasal allergies, hay fever, or simply "allergies."

  • Vasomotor rhinitis, a condition that involves nasal symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and nasal stuffiness, which are not caused by an infection or allergies.

  • Allergic conjunctivitis (also known as eye allergies) due to inhaled allergens, such as pollens or molds, or foods. Allergic conjunctivitis can cause red, itchy, watery eyes and puffy eyelids.

  • Allergic skin reactions, including hives or swelling under the skin, when they are mild.

  • Dermatographism, a rare skin condition characterized by a raised rash that develops when the skin is touched or scratched with an object.

  • Severe, life-threatening allergic reactions known as anaphylactic reactions. When used to treat anaphylactic reactions, carbinoxamine extended-release oral suspension is used in combination with epinephrine and other standard treatments.

  • Allergic reactions to blood or plasma.
