Bortezomib Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Bortezomib has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people given the drug were carefully documented and compared to those that occurred in a group of people receiving other chemotherapy medicines. As a result, it was possible to see what reactions occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medicines.
In these studies, the most common bortezomib side effects included:
  • Weakness or lack of energy -- in up to 72 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 57 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 57 percent
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations of the hands or feet -- up to 55 percent
  • Low platelet counts -- up to 52 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 50 percent
  • Low white blood cell counts -- up to 49 percent
  • Anemia (low red blood cells) -- up to 43 percent
  • Nerve pain -- up to 36 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 35 percent
  • Fever -- up to 35 percent
  • Mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety -- up to 35 percent
  • Decreased appetite -- up to 34 percent.
