Make sure to review the risks that may apply to you before starting treatment with bortezomib (Velcade®), as this drug can cause potentially dangerous complications for some people. To help minimize problems, you will have regular blood and urine tests to monitor your blood cell counts during bortezomib treatment. These tests will monitor potential problems, such as:
- Low levels of white blood cells, which can increase your risk for infections
- Low levels of platelets, which can cause bleeding problems
- A potentially life-threatening condition known as tumor lysis syndrome
- Liver damage.
Bortezomib can also cause or worsen heart problems. If you have heart disease or if you are at risk for it, you may need careful monitoring while using bortezomib.
