Belatacept and Mechanism of Action

Belatacept (NULOJIX®) is a prescription medicine used to prevent organ rejection in people who have had a kidney transplant.

Belatacept works by weakening the immune system. Transplant rejection occurs when the immune system, which is responsible for protecting the body from invaders, recognizes that your newly transplanted kidney is not a natural part of your body and attacks it. Because belatacept decreases the activity of the immune system, it is less able to reject the kidney.
