What Is Beclomethasone Nasal Spray Used For? -- An Overview

Beclomethasone nasal spray (Beconase® AQ) is a prescription medication approved for the following uses:
  • Treatment of seasonal or perennial nasal allergy symptoms
  • Treatment of non-allergic nasal symptoms (due to irritants, rather than allergens)
  • Prevention of the return of nasal polyps after surgical removal.

Why Is Beclomethasone Nasal Spray Used for Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths in the nose and sinuses. While not usually dangerous, they often cause bothersome symptoms, such as congestion and a runny nose. Typically, nasal polyps are not painful. Most cases are related to nasal allergies, although cystic fibrosis can also cause nasal polyps.
Although some nasal polyps can be treated with medications, many need to be surgically removed. Beclomethasone nasal spray is approved to help keep nasal polyps from returning after surgery to remove them.

Why Is Beclomethasone Nasal Spray Used for Nasal Allergies?

Allergies are the immune system's specific reaction to a normally harmless substance, such as pollens, certain foods, or medicines. They can either be seasonal or perennial. Seasonal allergies occur at specific times of the year, while perennial allergies can occur throughout the year. Allergies can affect various parts of the body, and symptoms are particularly common in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Nasal allergies (also known as allergic rhinitis) affect the nose. Symptoms include:
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal itching.
Combined with strategies to minimize a person's contact with allergens, allergy treatment can make life bearable for even the worst allergy sufferer. Treatment often includes allergy shots or medications. Beclomethasone nasal spray is a particularly useful allergy medicine for treating symptoms that primarily affect the nose.
