Drug Interactions With Azelastine

Certain medications can cause drug interactions with azelastine, including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and other antihistamines. Combining these medicines with azelastine can increase your risk of developing side effects, such as drowsiness and decreased alertness. To help prevent drug interactions with azelastine, tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, both prescription and non-prescription.

 

Drug Interactions With Azelastine: An Overview

Azelastine hydrochloride (Astelin®) can potentially interact with a number of other medications. Some of the medicines that may lead to azelastine drug interactions include:
 
  • Alcohol
 
  • Barbiturates, such as:
 
    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
 
  • Benzodiazepines, such as:
 
 
 
  • Narcotics or opiates, such as morphine (MSIR®, MS Contin®), oxycodone (OxyIR®, OxyContin®), or hydrocodone (Lortab®, Vicodin®)
 
  • Other antihistamines.
