Azelastine/Fluticasone Nasal Spray

Clinical Effects of Azelastine/Fluticasone Nasal Spray

Azelastine/fluticasone nasal spray has been evaluated in studies for treating nasal allergies. In these studies, azelastine/fluticasone nasal spray was more effective than either of the two active ingredients (fluticasone or azelastine) used alone for treating nasal allergy symptoms.

When and How to Use This Medication

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with azelastine/fluticasone nasal spray include the following:

  • This medication comes as a nasal spray. It is used in each nostril twice daily.

  • Make sure to shake the bottle gently before each use. Before using it for the first time, you will have to prime the pump by spraying it quickly until a fine mist appears (typically six sprays). If you have not used the bottle within the past 14 days, you will have to reprime it by spraying it until a fine mist appears.

  • It is important that the medication sprays as a fine mist rather than a stream, as it could interfere with the effectiveness of the drug or increase the risk for side effects.

  • Blow your nose before each dose. Breathe in gently while spraying the medicine into your nose. Do not try to inhale the spray, tilt your head back, or breathe in too deeply, as this medicine works when it comes into contact with the inside surfaces of the nose, not the throat or lungs. Swallowing it down the lungs is not effective and causes a bad taste.

  • Avoid aiming the spray toward the wall that separates your nostrils (in the middle of your nose, called the nasal septum). Spraying it toward the nasal septum increases the risk of nosebleeds. Some people find it easiest to avoid this by holding the bottle in the opposite hand (using the right hand to spray into the left nostril, and vice versa).

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.
