What Is Atovaquone/Proguanil?
Atovaquone/proguanil (
Malarone®) is a prescription medication licensed to prevent or treat
malaria. As the name implies, it is a combination of two antimalarial medicines: atovaquone and proguanil.
Just like any medicine, atovaquone/proguanil can cause side effects.
However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.
Some of the most common side effects seen with atovaquone/proguanil include but are not limited to:
- Headache
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Weakness, or a loss of energy and strength
- Appetite loss
- Dizziness.
