Atarax® (hydroxyzine hydrochloride) is a medication approved for several different uses. It is often used for treating itching or anxiety and can also be used as a sedative before or after general anesthesia. This medicine comes in tablet and syrup form, and is available by prescription only.
 
Although most people tolerate Atarax well, as with any drug, side effects are possible. Some of the most commonly reported side effects include drowsiness, headache, and dry mouth. Since some people are more likely to experience problems than others, tell your healthcare provider about all medical conditions you have before beginning treatment.
