What Is Artemether/Lumefantrine Used For?

How Does Artemether/Lumefantrine Work?

Artemether/lumefantrine treats malaria by killing the Plasmodium parasite. Although it is not entirely known how it does this, it is thought that the medication prevents Plasmodium from using blood glucose for energy and from making proteins and nucleic acid, which are essential for the parasite to live.

Can Children Use Artemether/Lumefantrine?

Artemether/lumefantrine is approved for use in children who weigh at least 11 pounds (5 kg). It has not been adequately studied in children who weigh less than 11 pounds.

Can Older Adults Use Artemether/Lumefantrine?

It is unknown whether older adults respond differently to artemether/lumefantrine than other age groups. However, because older adults may be taking additional medicines and may be more likely to have other medical problems, such as kidney or liver disease, artemether/lumefantrine should be used with caution in older adults.

Is It Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend artemether/lumefantrine for something other than malaria treatment. This would be known as an "off-label" use. Using artemether/lumefantrine to treat malaria caused by the parasite P. vivax is an example of an off-label use.
