Drug Interactions With Artemether/Lumefantrine

Grapefruit Juice
Grapefruit juice may increase the amount of artemether/lumefantrine in your blood, potentially increasing your risk for serious side effects. You should avoid drinking grapefruit juice while you are taking artemether/lumefantrine.

QT-Prolonging Medications
In general, artemether/lumefantrine should not be combined with any other medication that can cause QT prolongation (a certain change in the heart rhythm), due to the risk of a life-threatening arrhythmia. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking artemether/lumefantrine with another QT-prolonging medication.

Other Antimalarials
Taking artemether/lumefantrine with other antimalarial medications may lead to serious reactions, such as QT prolongation (a dangerous type of arrhythmia). Some antimalarial medications should not be given for at least a month after artemether/lumefantrine treatment. Artemether/lumefantrine should only be given with other antimalarial medicines when there are no other treatment options, and only when managed by a healthcare provider.

Phenothiazine Medications
Artemether/lumefantrine may increase phenothiazine levels in the blood, increasing the risk for side effects. This interaction has only been reported in people taking other antimalarial medications. However, because of the similarities between artemether/lumefantrine and these other medications, it may be a good idea to watch for possible phenothiazine side effects, such as extreme sedation, if you take a phenothiazine with artemether/lumefantrine.

Tamoxifen
The body transforms tamoxifen into another substance, called tamoxifen metabolite. Tamoxifen metabolite is more active than tamoxifen itself. Artemether/lumefantrine may decrease the amount of tamoxifen metabolite formed in the body, potentially making tamoxifen less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking artemether/lumefantrine with tamoxifen.
