Drug Interactions With Artemether/Lumefantrine

Drug Interactions With Artemether/Lumefantrine Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when artemether/lumefantrine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Anti-Retroviral Medicines (HIV Medications)
Taking artemether/lumefantrine with an anti-retroviral medication may decrease the level of the anti-retroviral in your body, making it less effective. Taking these medicines together may also either increase or decrease the level of artemether/lumefantrine in your body. Because of the potential for these interactions, your healthcare provider may monitor you more closely if you take artemether/lumefantrine with an anti-retroviral.

Birth Control Pills and Patches
Taking artemether/lumefantrine with birth control pills can make the birth control pills less effective, increasing the possibility that you will become pregnant. You also may experience bleeding between menstrual cycles. Talk to your healthcare provider about other methods for birth control if you are taking artemether/lumefantrine.

Certain Beta Blockers
Artemether/lumefantrine may increase the level of certain beta blocker medications in your body, potentially lowering your blood pressure too much. If your blood pressure becomes too low, you may feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint. If you are taking a beta blocker that may interfere with artemether/lumefantrine, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your blood pressure more closely during treatment.
