The standard dosage of artemether/lumefantrine for treating malaria in adults is four tablets taken twice a day for three days. The dosage for children will be based on the child's weight. You should start to feel better after a couple of days; however, do not stop taking the medication even though you feel better. This medication will not work unless it is taken as prescribed.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of Artemether/LumefantrineThere is only one standard recommended dose of artemether/lumefantrine (Coartem®) for malaria treatment in adults. When using this medication for treating malaria in children, the recommended dosage will depend on the child's weight.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Artemether/Lumefantrine Dosing for MalariaThe standard artemether/lumefantrine dosage for malaria treatment in adults is four tablets twice a day for three days. On day one, the two doses are taken eight hours apart. On days two and three, one dose is taken in the morning and the other in the evening.
The dosage for treating malaria in children who weigh less than 77 pounds (35 kg) is based on the child's weight. The recommended dose in children is as follows:
- 11 to 33 pounds (5 to 15 kg) -- one tablet followed by another tablet eight hours later. Then one tablet twice a day (in the morning and the evening) for two more days.
- 33 to 55 pounds (15 to 25 kg) -- two tablets followed by two more tablets eight hours later. Then, two tablets twice a day (morning and evening) for two more days.
- 55 to 77 pounds (25 to 35 kg) -- three tablets followed by three more tablets eight hours later. Then three tablets twice a day (morning and evening) for two more days.
Children who weigh 77 (35 kg) pounds or more are given the adult dose.
