How Often to Take Aralen

To treat malaria in adults, Aralen® (chloroquine phosphate) is often taken twice a day for one day and then once a day for two more days. For treating extraintestinal amebiasis, the standard recommended dosage is 1000 mg once a day for two days, then 500 mg once a day for two to three weeks.

To prevent malaria, Aralen must be taken before, during, and after travel to a malaria zone. It is usually taken once a week, starting two weeks before traveling to a malaria area. The medication is continued through your trip and is stopped eight weeks after leaving the malaria area.
