Welcome to the Drugs Channel
There are drugs for treating thousands of different diseases and conditions, from Alzheimer's disease to high cholesterol. Some drugs are effective at completely killing the cause of the disease, while others are used only to slow the progression of an illness -- and still others are only for controlling pain and other symptoms. Any drug has the potential to cause unwanted side effects. With many drugs (including ceftriaxone, ramipril, and cetirizine), side effects are mostly minor, requiring little or no treatment by a healthcare provider. Other medicines can have very dangerous side effects, which must be weighed against the benefits of taking the medication. For example, there are some prescription drugs (such as finasteride and lovastatin) that have shown clear evidence of serious side effects to unborn children if taken by pregnant women. Certain prescription drugs are considered habit-forming and very likely to be abused. Healthcare providers may have to follow special rules in prescribing these drugs to their patients (for example, not giving any refills on prescriptions).
